The leaves are turning, there's a crispness in the air, and the scent of cinnamon and spice is swirling through the kitchen. It can only mean one thing: it's time to bake apple hand pies!
There's something truly special about making these little pockets of yumminess. Maybe it's the way the dough feels in your hands, soft and pliable, or the satisfying process of crimping the edges just so. Or perhaps it's the anticipation of that first bite, the flaky crust giving way to warm, sweet-and-tart apple filling.
Whatever the reason, making apple hand pies is a delightful way to celebrate the fall season. I don’t make many pies all Spring and Summer, so many times these are the first pies I make of the Fall Season. It is truly a creative outlet for me. I crave making pies. Once I start it is hard to stop!
One of the best things about apple hand pies is their individual size. They're perfect for packing in lunches, taking on picnics, or enjoying as a cozy after-dinner treat. And if you happen to have any leftovers (though unlikely!), they store beautifully. Simply keep them at room temperature for a day or two, or freeze them for a taste of fall anytime you crave it. Just be sure to wrap them well to prevent freezer burn!
You can also make these ahead and then put them in the freezer unbaked. I love having some of these on hand to pop into the oven frozen mid-winter for a special treat.
