Chocolate Chip Meringues

The holidays are a time for festive decorations, heartwarming gatherings, and indulging in delicious treats. Among them, one delicate and delightful confection holds a special place in many cultures: the meringue cookie.  In my case, Chocolate Chip Meringues.

This recipe was shared with me by a friend when we spent the day together baking some of our favorite holiday treats. It is a fabulous memory that pops up every time I make them.

These airy, cloud-like cookies, made from whipped egg whites and sugar, have graced holiday tables for centuries. I didn’t realize their origins could be traced back to 17th-century Europe, where they were enjoyed by the aristocracy and eventually became a beloved treat across the continent.  Here’s a little about what I learned.

Symbolism and Significance

Meringues have come to symbolize purity, lightness, and joy, making them a perfect addition to a holiday cookie plate.

In some cultures, meringues are associated with specific holidays. For example, in France, they are often served during Christmas and New Year's celebrations. In Switzerland, they are a popular treat during the festive season and are often shaped into festive figures like stars and snowmen.

A Versatile Holiday Treat

Meringues are incredibly versatile and can be incorporated into holiday celebrations in countless ways. They can be served on their own as a light and refreshing dessert or used to decorate cakes, pies, and other festive treats. Their delicate sweetness pairs well with a variety of flavors, making them a perfect complement to rich chocolate desserts, tart fruit pies, and creamy custards.

Delicious. They are sweet, but the chocolate tempers the sweetness.
