I’d never had a sausage roll until I traveled to England. I didn’t realize how iconic they are and how much of a staple they are of British cuisine. You typically find sausage rolls in bakeries, but you can find them in meat shops and specialty shops.
I have to admit my first sausage roll was rather “posh.” I had been out for the day sightseeing in London and wandered into Fortnum & Mason on Piccadilly. I’d wanted to visit the famous store and didn’t realize they had prepared food, deli, and meats. I was starving, and it was late in the day, so I bought a sausage roll and some other treats to bring back to the hotel.
The first time I bit into the sausage roll, I was in heaven. You didn’t need more than a salad to go with it.
Then I started to think, why are sausage rolls so incredibly popular?
Where Did Sausage Rolls Come From?
While the exact origins are a bit hazy, sausage rolls seem to have emerged around the early 19th century in London. Some food historians believe they evolved from a French pastry called "pâté en croûte," which dates back to the 13th century, and that totally makes sense.
Others suggest a link to the ancient Greek "kotopita," a type of chicken pie. Whatever its ancestry, the sausage roll quickly became a beloved street food in Victorian England, sold by vendors at markets and sporting events.
Simple Pleasures, Endless Variations
The beauty of the sausage roll lies in its simplicity: a seasoned sausage meat filling encased in golden-brown puff pastry. Yet, within this basic framework, there's room for endless creativity. From classic pork sausage to gourmet venison or even vegetarian options, the choice of filling is vast. Some bakers add herbs, spices, or even cheese to their sausage meat for an extra layer of flavor.
The pastry itself can also vary. While puff pastry reigns supreme, shortcrust pastry offers a more crumbly, rustic alternative. And let's not forget the all-important glaze! An egg wash creates a beautiful shine, while a sprinkle of sesame seeds or black pepper adds a touch of texture and visual appeal.
A Roll for Every Occasion
The enduring popularity of sausage rolls is a testament to their versatility. They're perfect for a quick snack, a party buffet, or even a fancy picnic. Whether enjoyed warm from the oven or cold on a summer's day, sausage rolls are guaranteed to please. the simplest things in life are the most satisfying.
