Menu Ideas: New England Summer

New England Summer Menu

When you think of New England summers, images of rocky coastlines, quaint villages, and fresh seafood come to mind. And what better way to experience the region's culinary delights than with a traditional New England menu?

When I was growing up, every summer my Mom and Dad would have a big Clambake where we would cook lobsters, clams, corn, and potatoes.  If we weren’t having a clambake, you can bet we were having freshly cooked lobsters with corn on the cob several times during the summer.

Here's a summer menu that captures the essence of a New England summer.

New England Menu - Lobster Roll

The Star of the Show: The Lobster Roll

No New England summer feast is complete without a lobster roll. This iconic sandwich features succulent chunks of fresh lobster, lightly tossed with mayonnaise and served on a buttery, toasted split-top bun.

I, however, enjoy the butter and chive version of a lobster roll. I just think the butter is a bit lighter and lets the lobster shine. Whether you like yours warm with butter or cold with mayo, there's no denying the simple perfection of this quintessential New England treat.

New England Menu - Littleneck Clams & Chorizo

Another Regional Specialty: Littlenecks with Chorizo

There is a rich Portuguese heritage in Southern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, so if lobster isn’t your thing, consider this delightful dish of Littleneck Clams with Chorizo.  The broth is one of the best parts, so make sure you have lots of crusty bread, or even better garlic bread ensuring you don’t miss a drop.

A Refreshing Side: Summer Pasta Salad

To complement the rich lobster roll, a light and refreshing summer pasta salad is the ideal accompaniment. Think colorful vegetables like cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, and cucumbers tossed with al dente pasta and a zesty vinaigrette. You can add protein like grilled chicken or shrimp or keep it vegetarian with fresh herbs and crumbled feta cheese. The key is to use seasonal ingredients and let the flavors shine.

Iconic: Whoopie Pies

There is debate about the origin of Whoopie Pies, but there is no doubt today if you head to Maine, you will definitely hear a note of pride from locals about their Whoopie Pies being the best around. They have even been deemed the official state treat in Maine. (who knew there were official state treats?)  I love the chocolate (or pumpkin…yes, pumpkin) soft cakes with the creamy filling.  Although a Marshmellow fluff center is traditional, don’t let it restrict you.  I personally love a tangy cream cheese frosting.

New England Summer Menu - Blueberry Pie

Did Someone Say Pie?

Summer is synonymous for me with blueberries.  I remember being a kid and picking wild blueberries in Maine.  They were tiny nuggets of sweetness.  My Nectarine Blueberry Pie can be made with or without nectarines if you want a true blueberry experience.  Don’t hesitate to use the fresh,

frozen wild blueberries.  They are delicious and a perfect ingredient for this pie.

New England Summer Menu - Lemon Squares

A Sweet Finish: Lemon Squares

For my last idea for a sweet ending to your New England feast, lemon squares are a delightful choice. These tangy treats feature a buttery shortbread crust topped with a sweet and tart lemon curd filling. The combination of textures and flavors is simply irresistible. They're perfect for a picnic or a backyard barbecue, and they're sure to please everyone at the table.

Bringing It All Together

This classic New England menu celebrates fresh, seasonal ingredients and simple, satisfying flavors. It's perfect for a casual gathering with friends and family or a special occasion on a warm summer evening. So gather your loved ones, set the table, and enjoy a taste of New England!

Tips and Variations

  • For the lobster roll, use fresh, local lobster if possible.

  • For the pasta salad, feel free to experiment with different vegetables and herbs. Whatever is fresh from the garden.  Also consider grilling some to add more depth of flavor.

  • Besides the marshmallow or cream cheese frosting filling for the Whoopie pies, you can also try whipped cream, regular buttercream, or a favorite on a hot day, ice cream!

  • If you aren’t a blueberry lover, peaches and nectaries abound.  Give those a try.  Also, search your grocery store’s frozen fruits.  You may find a perfect combination, like I did for my Michigan Cherry Pie, where there are bags of sweet and tart cherries mixed together which is the perfect combination for this pie.

  • To make the lemon squares ahead of time, bake them the day before and store them in an airtight container at room temperature.
