In the South, cooking is a treasure trove of flavors, traditions, and heartwarming dishes that have been passed down through generations. From comforting classics to vibrant creations, this cuisine is a testament to the rich culinary heritage of the South and a Southern BBQ.
Here’s a menu that has a little something for everyone:
Deviled Eggs - Who Doesn’t Love a Deviled Egg?
Well, the answer is I don’t like traditional deviled eggs, but they are a staple at Southern gatherings, picnics, potlucks, and, of course, a Southern BBQ. Deviled eggs are a simple yet satisfying combination of hard-boiled egg yolks, mayonnaise, mustard, and a hint of paprika.
The reason I don’t like deviled eggs is because they have mustard and mayo in them. My twist on deviled eggs is Avacado Deviled Eggs - my favorite because they have lime juice and cayenne to give the deviled kick. I also like to make Greek Yogurt Deviled Eggs that have dill in them. Dill and eggs go so well together. Sometimes I’ll add a bit of cayenne to these too.
Sticky Spicy Ribs - One Word…Yum
When it comes to Southern barbecue, ribs reign supreme. These succulent, slow-cooked ribs are a testament to the art of patience and flavor. They are generously coated in a sticky, spicy sauce that creates a symphony of sweet, tangy, and smoky notes. Each bite is a messy, delicious adventure. Be sure to make plenty!
Oh and if ribs aren’t your thing, the process and sauce works really well on chicken wings…I’m just saying.
Creamy Buttermilk Coleslaw - A Refreshing Side
No Southern BBQ is complete without a side of creamy buttermilk coleslaw. This refreshing salad is a perfect counterpoint to the richness of the ribs. Shredded cabbage and carrots are tossed in a tangy buttermilk dressing, creating a crunchy, creamy, and slightly sweet side dish that complements the smoky flavors of the barbecue.
Biscuits - Another Southern Staple
Biscuits are a cornerstone of Southern cuisine, gracing breakfast, lunch, and dinner tables alike. These fluffy, buttery delights are made with simple ingredients like self-rising flour, buttermilk, and shortening.
I’m still working on my recipe, but if you want some ideas, you have to check out this page at King Arthur Baking Company because not only do they have great biscuit recipes, but they have some fantastic variations such as Scallion and Cheddar (my version is coming because I love these), Green Goddess Herb, and what about this Coffee Cake Biscuits. Now, the coffee cake biscuits may not be for your barbeque, but they would be great for breakfast.
Last but not least - Banana Pudding
You need a sweet ending to your Southern BBQ, and banana pudding is a classic Southern choice. Layers of creamy vanilla pudding, sliced bananas, and crisp vanilla wafers create a symphony of textures and flavors. Topped with a generous dollop of whipped cream, this dessert is a delightful indulgence that captures the essence of Southern hospitality.
A Southern BBQ is a celebration of flavor, family, and tradition. From the comforting simplicity of deviled eggs to the finger-licking goodness of sticky, spicy ribs, each dish tells a story and evokes a sense of warmth and belonging. So, gather around the table, share a meal, and savor the wonders of Southern cooking.
